Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of American Literature and Culture undertakes the supervision of Ph.D projects in various areas of academic fields. We welcome students interested in nineteenth-, twentieth, and twenty-first-century American fiction, drama, poetry; American History, Culture and Politics; American Modernism and Postmodernism; Ethnic Studies and Immigration; Southern Studies; Gender Studies; Popular Culture; American Film and Television; the American Avant-garde; American Gothic; Experimental Theater; African American Literature and Drama; Science Fiction; Cyberculture/Cyberpunk; Print and Digital Media.

The School runs a research seminar series (“Problematics of Theory and Culture”) in which visiting scholars, writers/artists and school staff from both departments (English and American Literature and Culture) present papers based on their current research or writing projects. Ph.D students are given the opportunity to present papers at the Research Day Graduate Conference organized every year at the end of Spring Term.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The students are expected to have completed an M.A. before commencing their PhD. Pursuing a Ph.D involves undertaking original research on a topic proposed by the candidate, and producing a book-length thesis of 80,000-100,000 words. The normal period of study is 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. Students submit detailed research proposals twice a year (October 1- November 15 and April 1 – May 15).

SUPERVISION

If the candidate is accepted on the program, the Department, on the basis of the initial proposal, proposes the supervising faculty member first to the graduate committee and then to the General Assembly of Faculty Members – Special Composition (GAFM-SC) together with an advisory committee consisting of two further faculty members with a relevant specialization, one who may be a faculty member of a foreign university in accordance with article 9 par. 2 of Law 3585/148/16-7-2008.

DURATION OF STUDIES

The period of time for thesis completion cannot extend to fewer than six or more than twelve semesters. If the thesis has not been completed within the period of twelve semesters, the candidate’s registration is automatically terminated by the (ratifying) decision of the GAFM-SC.

ORAL DEFENSE

When all the members of the advisory committee concur that the thesis has been completed, they confirm this in writing to the GAFM-SC and request that a seven-member examination committee be appointed. The candidate publicly defends his/her thesis before the examination committee, which then assesses the originality of the thesis and whether it constitutes a contribution to scholarship.
